“People wouldn’t expect an Olympic athlete to go to the Games without a coach, so why shouldn’t we believe that we could all benefit from having a coach to help us accomplish our goals?”

- Kathrin Lake

How is coaching different from consulting and counseling?

In coaching:

  • It is not about your past
  • The focus is on now and the future
  • We identify and release blocks so you get where you want to go
  • If you don't know where you want to go, we will figure it out together
  • Coaches hold their clients accountable to accomplish tasks
  • Coaches help clients get closer to their dreams and to greater fulfilment
  • Coaches don't tell you what to do - they get you to tell them what you are going to do
  • Consultants make recommendations and some specialized coaching, like entrepreneurship, are a combination of consulting and coaching
Writing and Presentation Coaching
Being a writer and a teacher of writing for many years, I know that people understand the world through stories. Stories are powerful. You will want to use stories in presentations, writing and in any materials where you are trying to communicate or teach. Simply put, messages are grounded and understood better when presented as a story.
In writing and presentation coaching, I teach clients how to create impactful stories from their own life experiences, or from other sources. I teach them how to draw from those stories the wealth of knowledge, and the messages that they want their readers or listeners to benefit from. My aim is that their readers and listeners will be completely engaged and entertained while they are learning.

Here is an example of a teaching story...

The Biggest Writer's Block
I was invited to the house of one of my writing students for tea. She wanted to discuss a block she was having. This person had worked their whole life in the court systems as a court stenographer and was now ready to write the crime stories she had been listening to and inspired by. She showed me her outlines, her plot lines and what she had written so far, but she said she was stuck until she knew the answers to a couple of critcal questions. One was about interrogations at the police department, and the other was about autopsies. She told me that she knew many policemen and people in the coroner's office who would be able to help her, but she could not bring herself to call them.
"Why not?" I asked.
"Because," she said, "They don't know me as a writer. I can't suddenly tell them that I'm a writer when my entire professional career they have known me as one of their colleagues. They might ask me what I've written."
I have seen this many times before. Those who are writing, but have not yet published, judge themsleves so harshly that it holds them back. As I was figuring out how I might best inspire her I looked around at where we were sitting in the garden. I said to her, "Your garden is absolutely beautiful." She said, "Thank you, my husband and I are able to spend more time on it now that we are retired." Then an idea suddenly dawned on me and I said, "Listen, when you go down to the nursery and you go to ask one of the gardening experts there a question, do they tell you that they are not going to help you unless you have proof that you are a gardener?"
She laughed and sheepishly said, "No."
I went further. "Being a writer is like being a gardener. You are a writer because you do it regularly, just like a gardener is a gardener because they have been gardening, not for any other reason."
She said, "You're right! I have been writing every day, even more than I have been gardening."
Two days later she told me she had contacted the policemen she knew and found out about interrogations. And, she was particularly proud that the coroner had invited her to see a real autopsy performed.

I have used the above teaching story in speeches, in coaching, and in an article soon to be part of a book called "Writing with Cold Feet" about fear of writing. Stories are impactful, and to use them professionally gives you an edge as a writer, speaker, coach, educator, leader and communicator.

I find that people are often attracted to me because they have a secret wish to write a book, or be a public speaker but think that it may be too ambitious for them, or they have no experience. Often people who originally came to me for life coaching, executive or entrepreneurship coaching, end up working with me on writing and presentation projects. Inevitably these projects do launch them to a new level in confidence, business acumen, leadership and overall personal fulfilment.
